Miss Gem Miss Gem (born as Natasha Llenas on May 9, 1986, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) is a house Dj, composer and songwriter commonly known by the alias the "Princes of Plates". ==Life and Career== ===Early Life=== '''Miss Gem''' was born on May 9, 1986 in the city of Santo Domingo during a difficult labour which lasted 9 hours and almost took her life and her mother's. Her mother, Francis Aguiar, is an architect and interior designer, and her father, Miguel Angel Llenas, is a business man and successful banker. She has two siblings, Lauren Cristina (older) and Miguel Andres (younger). Her ancestry includes Spanish and Dutch. At a very early age, she started writing and composing songs. She wrote her first song when she was only eight years old — a song inspired by the rhythms of the recently departed Mexican singer, Selena. This first song, “Lo Queria pero no me Queria,” was dedicated to her longtime school sweetheart, who she claims never returned her affection. Her second song, “I Miss You,” was written and composed approximately two years later, inspired by her profound admiration towards singers such as Celine Dion, Des’ree and Cher. She wrote the song during summer, driven by how hollow and sad she felt during the season — when she was apart from her school sweetheart. Miss Gem showed aptitude and natal skills for music from the very beginning. She has always been a sentimental person and, more importantly, she has never been afraid or ashamed of expressing her feelings. Ever since she was a child, she cultivated her habit of writing. Miss Gem’s music career officially began in the early 1990s when she joined a piano academy. She spent eight years at the academy, growing her love of music and experiencing the awakening of an inner passion for music performance. She participated in the academy’s auditions and presentations, developing her abilities and acquiring the tools that would subsequently lead her on the most important journey of her life. Later on, Miss Gem decided to leave the piano academy. While her dream was to perform as a concert pianist, deep down in her heart she felt like she lacked some of the passion required to achieve her dream. Sometimes, she didn’t even identify with the calmness of classical music. Following her obvious love for music and her sincere desire to perform for an audience, she decided to join a flamenco school, where she learned all the types of Spanish dance. During the years she spent at the flamenco school, she was able to perform in plays and events at different theaters. Nonetheless, her greatest achievement during this period was learning to listen to music while dancing along to it — counting steps and beats, as well as managing stage fright. Miss Gem’s dancing days came to an end during her last year of college in 2007, when free time was scarce due to several labor projects she was running at the same time. All of a sudden, after years of hardworking days and tireless nights, everything changed for her when she finished college. Once again, she faced the opportunity of doing things out of passion not obligation. ===Career=== ===="Electronic passion origins"==== Miss Gem’s electronic journey goes back to the first track she heard at a friend’s 13th birthday party — ATB’s “Till I Come.” What surprised her the most was the fact that it was different from everything she had been taught that music was. As a result, she started to browse for this so-called electronic music hoping to find all about it, until filling her mp3 player became her favorite hobby. A few years later, while riding in a friend’s car one day, she was once again captivated by the music being played. The song completely drew her attention, so she glanced at the mp3 radio and read the name Tiesto. After researching, she came to know all about famous DJs and their electronic parties. Later in 2004, Miss Gem lived the most exciting night of her life, she went to her first electronic party to see DJ Super Danny Howells. Under the lights and lasers, between the people and the nitrogen, Miss Gem curiously examined what Danny was doing and how the people responded. She wished, for the first time in her life, that she could do the same. From that day forward, she went to all the parties she could in order to see all of the great DJs and authors of the electronic music that would land in her country. Among them, Tiesto (her favorite, as he was the first DJ she came to know), Erick Morillo, Sandra Collins, Paul Oakenfold, Sasha, Digweed, Danny Tenaglia, Deep Dish, Bob Sinclair, Swedish House Mafia, Dessyn Masiello, Nick Warren and others. ===="Birth of Dj Miss Gem"==== During spring break in 2009, Miss Gem met a friend who happened to be a DJ. As they fell into a long conversation, she mentioned that she had always wanted to become a DJ, too. Her friend responded in amazement, because for the last five years he had been searching for a female who could prove to be authentically willing to learn how to play electronic music and become a famous DJ. Engaged by excitement, Miss Gem quickly assured her friend that he had just found his match. Afterwards, the plans, the lessons and the illusion began. Miss Gem got her own setup, installed it in the middle of her living room and practiced every day for hours. Practicing and getting involved with the music world and the people in it soon became the object of all her attention. This shortly led to the birth of many friendships, friends who would join her at home to play together, while she took advantage by learning and improving her skills. “Gem,” Natasha’s DJ name, comes from the word gemstone, because it was her personal trademark to wear Swarovski crystal designs around her eyes long before she dreamt of becoming a DJ. When defining herself as an artist, Natasha thought that attaching this trend to her DJ name would help people recognize her face more easily and shortly thereafter it became her trademark. The prefix Miss, used worldwide to name female DJs, came along when a DJ from Germany suggested that she should add it to her artistic name for marketing purposes. ====2010: "Haiti's Earthquake"==== On November 2010, only two weeks before Haiti suffered the historical devastating earthquake, Miss Gem flew on an evening private flight to Haiti to fulfill her first abroad Gig. She was hired to play at a last minute very fancy private party that celebrated the opening of a very important building by the Nader family. When she arrived at the airport, she was immediately set to fly back to the Dominican Republic by the customs personnel due to missing Visa paperwork. When almost boarding the return flight, the Nader family was able to get in touch with the president of Haiti, which gave the authorization himself for Miss Gem to be allowed in the country. The next day, she was safely placed on a Private Flight back home. ====2012: "European Gigs"==== The year 2012 was defining for Miss Gem’s career, as she was able to go perform abroad for the second time. She flew to Madrid, where she performed successfully in famous clubs Pacha and Joy Slava.That same year, she performed in a very important concert, Romeo Santos’. She performed the electronic music counterpart for the two shows that each gathered the largest crowd she has performed for — the first saw 50,000 people and the second saw 45,000 people. Miss Gem has played in all of the cities in her country, as well as all of the clubs in her city — the ones that currently exist as well as all of those that previously existed during her DJ career. She has performed at numerous occasions, including parties, concerts and private events. She is well-known in her country and has a very well-established name in the Dominican music market — exactly how she promised it would be at the very beginning of her career. ====2014: "Miller Soundclash Competition: Las Vegas"==== In 2014 she won the first edition of the “Miller Soundclash” contest. She competed against 16 other Djs from the Dominican Republic. During the competition she outnumbered all of the contestants with votes through the social networks. After wining she went to Las Vegas for the final competition together with 9 Djs from all over the world where they competed as the 10 best Djs of the world. Mexico won the competition and Miss Gem turned out to be one the favorites during the competition and the only female Dj. She was delivered the tough chore of opening the competition, which she did with honor, courage and determination. After winning the competition she went back to her hometown to go on her “Vegas Tour” all over the country. ====2015: "Open Format and New York"==== 2015 has been a remarkably important year for Miss Gem since she has, once more, reinvented her music career introducing herself to the Open Format style. Using cd's in order to perform (even) Open Format. This has led her to gain new followers on the market, and explore new venues and events. She has been able to build a very unique show where she is admired by the crowd while going between different music genres, live, without the help of any software or computer. On Saturday May 9, on her 29th birthday, the new open format style of performance took her to play live at a very successful gig in New York City's club "809 Lounge" where she earned the opportunity of near future gigs. Today Miss Gem is working on her new project, “Femmenology,” together with Female Dj Nathy G. On this occasion, she promises to offer a new concept that she claims will revolutionize the music industry and continue to promote her as an artist, all over the world. ==Personal Life== On 2014, Miss Gem decided to start visiting poor institutions in the means of providing help. She initiated the journey with a local asylum called “Hogar de Ancianos Desamparados San Francisco de Asis”. Driven by the inner satisfaction that this charity provoked her she later founded a movement named “We Party to Help”. “We Party to Help” is an idealism that aims to raise awareness and create a culture among the Dominican youth of helping the less fortunate even during the time they spend on recreating themselves and having fun, hence she called it We party to Help.
